The St. Louis Cardinals have mounted a furious challenge in the NL Central, but now have lost both starting pitcher Adam Wainwright and closer Trevor Rosenthal to elbow injuries.  The Redbirds managed to score 11 runs in yesterday’s game against Pittsburgh.  But the Bucs almost came back to win.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch baseball beat writer Derrick Goold cleverly summarizes their issues:

Starting pitching has been the calcium of their hopes to contend.  A lack of offense has been the cavities.
