Only Carp’s Salsa Is Hot

The Athletic has a story about Matt Carpenter’s struggles to keep healthy and hit productively for the Cardinals. The author, Mark Saxon, has a really clever lede to open his piece.

When you buy a jar of Matt Carpenter Mojo Salsa at a St. Louis grocery store chain, you can tell how fresh it is just by glancing at the bottom of the jar. A sticker advises you to use it by a certain date.

Baseball players don’t have expiration dates, so how will the St. Louis Cardinals know whether their once-elite leadoff hitter, whose hot hitting inspired the salsa partnership, is past his prime?

“The game itself will tell you, right?” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “Ultimately, it will tell us.”
